What that means in practice

Everything here describes how a system generally works in the United States. None of it is a statement about your situation, your estate, or your rights. Two families in the same state, with the same accounts, can face different answers depending on the will, the court, and which employee at a platform reads the request.

Decisions about a particular estate belong with a lawyer licensed in the state where the estate is being administered. That is not a formality. The law governing digital assets varies from state to state, and two states have not adopted the common framework at all.

Where the limits are sharpest

Some subjects on this site carry more risk than others, and they are worth naming plainly.

• Access to someone else’s account. Federal computer-crime law and every state’s own computer-crime statute apply to logging in with another person’s credentials. The pages here describe what published sources say. They do not tell you what is lawful for you to do.
• Money and cryptocurrency. Nothing here recommends buying, selling, holding, or moving any asset. Take those questions to the lawyer handling the estate and, where relevant, a licensed financial professional.
• Tax. This site does not address tax at all. Estates commonly raise tax questions; a tax professional is the right place for them.

Accuracy and dating

Every factual claim on this site was verified on July 28, 2026, and each page says so. Platform policies change without notice and often without a published date. State law changes after legislative sessions. A page that was accurate when written may not be accurate when you read it, which is why how we check this sets out the re-check schedule and the known ways this subject’s guidance decays.

Where a claim rests on weaker evidence, the page says so in the sentence itself rather than in a footnote. Where a platform publishes nothing at all, the page records that absence instead of guessing.

Editorial review
